My One-Day-Of-Teleportation Wish List

Imagine.
Early one morning, while the rest of the house is still sound asleep, I awaken with a start – there is someone in my bedroom! And out of the blue twiligh steps a beautiful fairy in a white dress, who whispers for me to follow her… Dumbstruck, I put on my slippers and follow her to the kitchen, where she tells me two things, both of which shock me to the core of my being. The first thing is that I am destined to die within a week, and there is nothing I can do to prevent it. The second one is that I have been granted (as a consolation of sorts) my very own secret one-day-only gift of teleportation, starting this very morning! It is my final chance to see the places and buildings around the world I have been dying to see (no pun intended). We have to leave right away, says the fairy, but I get a minute to jot down a note to my family…

As I tie the laces of my very best walking shoes, I decide to put the implications of the first message out of my mind for the rest of the day and focus on the task at hand.

Now, I have travelled quite a bit in my life, so there are many must-see-before-you-die´s I can skip. Such as the Chinese Wall, the Eiffel Tower, the Red Square of Moscow, Venice, the Pantheon, the White House, just to mention a few. But still there are plenty of places on my wish list…

The first few stops are easy, and I decide to start with Egypt to see the great Pyramids (I really do hope I get to see them before I die…)

It is incredible to think about how they transported these humongous rocks with only manpower available. Goes to show how far the power of will (and money) can get us.

Since I´m in the “neighborhood” my next stop is the library of Alexandria. It is designed by the same (hero) architects as the Oslo Opera House, namely Snøhetta, and it was their first biggie… As a lover of books, as well as architecture, this building is definitely on my wish list.
By assosiation I take a quick stop at the Sydney Opera house designed by the Danish Jørn Utzon…

Still going strong I teletransport myself to Istanbul in Turquay, to see the beautiful Hagia Sophia

While I´m at it I go to see the stunning Taj Mahal of India.

Then, I decide that the next three stops are as follows; Villa La Savoie by Le Corbusier (left), the Falling Water House by Frank Lloyd Wright (see picture in this post), and the Hundertwasser House in Vienna (right).

These are all buildings that have long been on my to-see list, but as I still have more time and energy I go to see Rosenthal Center in Cincinnati by Zaha Hadid. It is nice to experience the work of a so-called starchitect, and it certainly is impressive…

After all this I really need a breather before I go home, so I decide to take a deep meditation in a secluded temple of Tibet (preferably unspoiled by the Chinese) and hop around on the mountain tops there for a while. After at least a couple of hours here, I think to myself: “Now, I can die happily” and thence I return to my family for tears and goodbye…
